Men's Lacrosse Wins 10th Straight, 19-3 Over Wooster

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University men's lacrosse team scored seven first quarter goals and led 13-2 at halftime as the No. 3-ranked Mustangs won their 10th consecutive regular season game and seventh-straight at home with a dominating 19-3 victory over Wooster Tuesday at the Caves Athletics Complex.

With the win, Stevenson (7-0) set a new school record for most consecutive wins to start a season, breaking the previous mark of six set by the 2007 squad. Since the Gettysburg game, the Mustangs have outscored its opponents 81-24 over five games while outshooting them 260-126.

In addition to adding to their winning streak, Stevenson went 15-for-15 on clears against the Fighting Scots, extending its streak of successful clears to 36, dating back to the fourth quarter of their game at St. Mary's (Md.) on March 11. The MUstangs were succesful on its final four clears against the Seahawks before going 17-for-17 versus Mary Washington.

Sophomore Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winter Mills) totaled a game-high six points for the second-straight game on three goals and three assists. The team leader in assists with 17, he has totaled at least three in five of his seven games this season. Senior Greg Furshman (Miami, Fla./Towson) scored a season-high four goals while winning 9-of-10 faceoffs and collecting eight ground balls. Junior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) joined Dailey with his team-leading third hat trick of the season while adding an assist.

Alex Mies gave Wooster (3-3) its only lead of the game with his ninth goal of the season with 9:33 remaining in the first quarter, but the advantage would last for only 13 seconds until Furshman found the back of the net for the ninth time this year. Furshman's goal marked the first of 13 consecutive for Stevenson who built a 13-1 lead before the Fighting Scots would score again with just 40 seconds left in the first half. Furshman scored three of his goals during the run while Dailey added two goals and three assists. Ford also had two goals while reigning CAC Player of the Week, junior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger), had two assists.

Leading by 11 at the half, Dailey and Ford would score the only two goals of the third quarter before the Mustangs netted the first four of the fourth to run its lead to 17.

Mark Weschler scored a man-up goal for Wooster, his team-leading 15th of the season, with only 43 seconds remaining in the game. Stevenson held a huge advantage in shots, 57-18, and ground balls, 48-25, while winning 17-of-26 faceoffs.

All 58 players in uniform played for the Mustangs, including sophomore Ryan Bragg (Downington, Pa./Downingtown West), freshman Brandon Capaletti (Baltimore/Curley) and sophomore Vince Delle Grotti (Trenton, N.J./Notre Dame) who all scored their first goals of the season. Sophomore Adam Pupo (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) also picked up his first point of the year with the assist on Delle Grotti's goal with 1:58 remaining in the game.

Junior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) remained unbeaten in seven career starts in goal, finishing with six saves.

Mustangs Tie Best Ever Start, Run Past Mary Washington

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University men's lacrosse team scored 12 consecutive goals and held Mary Washington scoreless for a stretch of 30:39 as the No. 3-ranked Mustangs blew open a competitive game en route to their ninth-straight regular season win, 17-4 Saturday at the Caves Athletics Complex. With the win, Stevenson (6-0, 2-0 CAC) tied the school record for most consecutive wins to start a season, tying them with the 2007 squad that also went 6-0 before losing at No. 8 Washington (Md.) on March 21. Mustangs have also not lost a regular season game since dropping a 13-12 decision to No. 1 Salisbury at home on Apr. 5, 2008 and are unbeaten in their last six at home.

Sophomore Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winter Mills) led the way with three goals and three assists, his second multi-goal game of the season. He also tied his season in assists for the fourth time. Junior Nic Bevacqua (Booton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) had three goals and one assist marking his third game out of the last four with three goals. Junior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) added one goal and two assists.

Mary Washington (4-3, 0-2 CAC) held its only lead of the game for only 44 seconds when Charlie White scored the game's first goal off an assist from Kohl Meyer with 11:21 remaining in the first quarter. Bevacqua would then net the first of five-straight goals for the Mustangs at 10:28 to tie the game before adding his second with 11:08 left in the half to cap the run and give them a 5-1 lead. Brent Fisk and Brian Deal would each net goals in the final nine-plus minutes for the Eagles who cut their deficit to two at halftime, 5-3.  

However, Stevenson would blow the game open by scoring the next 12-straight goals, outscoring Mary Washington 8-0 in the third quarter and netting the first four of the fourth quarter. Sean Brown would finally end the streak when he scored off an assist from Evan Weiss with only 1:28 remaining in the game. The Mustangs doubled up the Eagles in shots 48-24 and forced 26 turnovers while killing off all eight of their extra man opportunities. J

No. 7 Mustangs Erupt for 16 More Goals in Win at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Six players totaled at least three points as the No. 7-ranked Stevenson University men's lacrosse team scored 16 goals for the second-straight week against a team from the Centennial Conference in its 16-7 win over Ursinus Saturday at Eleanor Frost Snell Alumnae Field. The Mustangs (4-0) outshot the Bears 61-24 and won 17 out of 24 faceoffs en route to their seventh-straight regular season victory.

Senior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) led the charge with a season-high six points, totaling two goals and four assists. The quartet of senior Greg Furshman (Miami, Fla./Towson), juniors Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) and Nic Bevacqua (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and sophomore Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winter Mills) each added four points.

Furshman, Ford and Bevacqua each had hat tricks with three goals apiece while Dailey had three assists. Furshman finished the game with four points and four ground balls and went 9-for-12 on faceoffs.

Similar to the Gettysburg game, Stevenson trailed 2-1 in the first quarter before scoring 10 of the next 11 goals to take an 11-3 lead with 7:37 remaining in the third quarter. Kazimer hand a hand in five of those 10 goals, scoring twice and assisting on three more. Dailey did all of his scoring during the run while Bevacqua, who scored three of the Mustangs' first six goals, had two goals and one assist.

Also during that time, senior Austin Hale (Baltimore/Eastern) and freshman Brian Badolato (Boontontap, N.J./Mountain Lakes) picked up their first goals of the season. For Hale, it was the second of his career. After a slow start, Stevenson outscored Ursinus 12-5 over the final three quarters during which it also held a 45-16 edge in shots and won 14 of 17 faceoffs. T

he Mustangs used four different players in goal, led by junior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) who made eight saves in earning his fourth win in his fourth career start. Seniors Eric Fleegle (Easton/St. Peter & Paul) and Chris Carroll (Deale/Southern) also saw time in net as did junior Andrew Harrington (Cambridge/South Dorchester).

Senior Mike Simon (Fallston/Fallston) and sophomore Evan Douglass (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) continued to lead the defense as both combined for seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. Eric Farris scored six of the seven goals for Ursinus (1-2) while Dan Monzo and Pat Gillen each added two points.

Stevenson opens CAC play at St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday. Game time is at 3:00 p.m.



No. 7 Men's Lacrosse Dominates No. 2 Gettysburg, 16-6

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Sophomore Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winter Hills) and junior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) each scored four goals to lead the No. 7-ranked Stevenson University men's lacrosse team to a 16-6 victory over No. 2 Gettysburg Wednesday afternoon at Caves Athletics Complex.

After achieving the school's highest-ever ranking on Monday, the Mustangs (3-0) equaled their scoring output from the first two games combined while totaling 44 shots and holding a 27-19 edge in ground balls.

The win is the first for Stevenson against a team ranked in the top five nationally since a 10-9 victory over No. 3 Cortland State on Feb. 24, 2007.

Dailey, who tied his career-high in goals, also added three assists to finish with seven points, three shy of his career-high of 10 set in a 16-6 victory over Mary Washington on April 17, 2007 when he had three goals and seven assists. Dailey and Ford combined to score four of Stevenson's six first quarter goals as it led 6-2 after one and 10-2 at the half.

Gettysburg (1-1) took a 2-1 lead in the game's first four minutes after back-to-back goals by Josh Reichert and Danno Lynch just 1:07 apart. Unphased, the Mustangs scored the next 10 consecutive goals, including three in a span of 1:07 to end the first quarter. Dailey scored or assisted on five of Stevenson's first eight goals while picking up an assist on the eventual game-winner by senior Greg Furshman (Miami, Fla./Towson) just 21 seconds into the second quarter. Furshman finished the game with one goal and one assist, won 11 of 17 faceoffs and totaled six ground balls in the second match-up against his brother Zach who is the starting goalie for the Bullets. A year ago, Greg had a goal in a 10-9 loss at Gettysburg, but Zach did not see any action.

Ford had a season-high five points for the Mustangs with senior Nic Bevacqua (Booton Township, N.J./Mt. Lakes) adding three goals and junior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) totaling two goals and two assists. Stevenson's starting attack of Dailey, Ford and Kazimer finished with 10 goals and six assists while the midfield of Furshman and senior Brett Yoder (Parkton/Herford) added two goals and three assists.

After totaling a career-high 12 saves in the team's 9-7 win at No. 15 Stevens on Saturday, junior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) made 10 against the Bullets before giving way to senior Eric Fleegle (Easton/St. Peter & Paul) for the final three minutes. Reichert had three goals to lead Gettysburg while Tom O'Donnell and Zach Pucci added two points each.

Stevenson looks to continue its six-game regular season win streak on Saturday when it travels to Ursinus.



Men's Lacrosse Ranked at No. 5 by Inside Lacrosse

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - After being ranked as high as eighth in Division III last season, the Stevenson University men's lacrosse team received its first-ever top five national ranking as the Mustangs were ranked at No. 5 by Inside Lacrosse in the organization's 2009 Yearbook which is available now.

     In addition, the magazine named four Mustangs to its list of preseason All-Americans, highlighted by junior attackman Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) who was selected to the first team. Joining Ford is junior attackman Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henniger) who was chosen to the second team, senior midfielder Greg Furshman (Miami, Fla./Towson) who was a third team selection and sophomore attackman Jim Dailey (Westminster/Winter Mills) who named honorable mention.

     "We are very honored and priviledged to be ranked by Inside Lacrosse," said fifth-year head coach Paul Cantabene. "It has been a long journey during my four years here and we hope that this is the beginning of a long succesful run both in the CAC and on the national level. We think we have made some great strides in getting to this point and we look forward to it leading to success on the field." Stevenson, who is 43-23 under Cantabene, was one of two CAC teams ranked in the top five as two-time defending national champion Salisbury who was ranked No. 1. The Sea Gulls represent one of five teams ranked in the magazine's top 20 that appear on the Mustangs' 2009 schedule. Gettysburg, who lost in double overtime to Salisbury in the NCAA semifinals, was ranked second, while Lynchburg is at No. 10, Stevens at No. 11 and Denison is at No. 19.

     Inside Lacrosse also provided preseason rankings and all-conference teams for each of the 16 conferences in Division III with Salisbury and Stevenson ranked as the top two teams in the CAC followed by St. Mary's (Md.), Mary Washington, Wesley, York (Pa.), Marymount and Hood. Ford, Kazimer and Furshman were chosen as preseason all-conference selections along with Salisbury's Kylor Berkman, who was the magazine's player and midfielder of the year, Mike Von Kamecke, Connor Burgasser and Kyle Maynard, St. Mary's Dennis Rossen, Marc DiPasquale and A.J. Armstrong and Wesley's Kirk Waldie and Jim McCleaft.

     Stevenson opens the season at home against Widener on Saturday, February 21 before playing in back-to-back games against Stevens and Gettysburg. The team's much anticipated showdown with Salisbury takes place on the road on Saturday, April 4.
